Physics
Physics is the science that attempts, by experiment and logical analysis, to discover the most fundamental laws of nature - how the world “works”. High school physics is required for future training in many fields, including Engineering, Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Studies. In addition to these, there are many programs offered at institutions such as Red River College that require high school physics, such as radiation therapy.
Physics 30S: This is the grade 11 physics course at REC. this course is an introduction to motion, forces, gravity, electricity, magnetism, sound, and light.
Physics 40S:
AP Physics: The honours physics program covers the same topics as the S level program but to a greater depth. At the end of the the program (end of 42A) you will write two exams. The first is an AP practice exam that will be treated as the final exam for your high school credit. The second exam is the North American AP exam; this exam is marked in the US and you will receive a mark from 1 to 5: where a mark of 3 - 5 are qualifying marks and a 1 or 2 will require retaking the test. The AP exam will not affect your high school marking however a mark of a 4 or a 5 on the exam wiill count as a recognizeed credit at The Universcity of Manitoba. This course is diffarent from the S course as it is taught over two years. 30A covers the topic of mechanics: an exploration of motion, forces, gravity. Then in 42A physics the remaining topics such as light, electriciy, magnitisim and sound are covered. Students transfering from 30A to 40S will find some difficulty in that they did not cover electricity, magnetism, sound, and light in 30A however they will also have an advantage in that they will already have covered the mechanics portion of 40S when they were in 30A and could conciveably use that time to catch up on the topics that they missed.
